The Challenge

Newly hired agents are expected to support both customer service and sales inquiries involving technical products. Without a foundational understanding of those products, agents may struggle to interpret customer requests, recognize relevant specifications, or effectively use supporting resources.

The challenge was to introduce unfamiliar technical concepts in an approachable format without overwhelming learners with information better addressed through advanced training or point-of-need performance support.

The Solution

I designed and developed a self-paced course using Articulate Rise 360 that progressively introduces learners to roller-chain sprockets.

The course covers six sections:

  • What Is a Sprocket?
  • Anatomy of a Sprocket
  • Sprocket Types
  • Choosing the Right Material
  • Final Quiz
  • Final Summary

Through visual explanations, interactive exploration, real-world examples, and knowledge checks, learners build an understanding of how roller-chain sprockets work, identify their main features, and interpret common product specifications.

The content introduces chain size, number of teeth, common hub styles, and material considerations, including carbon steel and stainless steel.

Design Approach

The course follows a progressive learning sequence, introducing foundational concepts before exploring product characteristics and specifications.

I incorporated labeled graphics, interactive content, realistic examples, and scenario-based questions to reinforce key concepts and encourage learners to apply what they have learned.

Formative knowledge checks provide feedback throughout the experience, while a final assessment evaluates learners' understanding of the foundational material.

A deliberate design decision was to separate foundational knowledge from more advanced product identification and compatibility instruction. Rather than attempting to cover every technical detail, the course focuses on concepts agents need to understand before progressing to more complex tasks.

Development and Content Validation

I independently researched and developed the technical content, using AI-assisted research alongside manufacturer specifications, technical references, and existing educational resources.

Information gathered through ChatGPT was independently verified against source material before incorporation into the course.

The content underwent iterative revisions to improve clarity, instructional sequencing, and the level of technical detail appropriate for new hires.

Role Within the Onboarding Program

The course is designed as part of a larger blended onboarding experience that combines self-paced learning, instructor-led activities, and performance support.

Sprocket Fundamentals introduces foundational concepts, while the Customer Call Flow and Sprocket Product Lookup provide resources agents can use when applying that knowledge during customer interactions.

Together, these artifacts demonstrate an integrated approach to learning and performance support rather than relying exclusively on formal training.

About This Portfolio Artifact

Sprocket Fundamentals is an original course developed specifically for the fictional Outerspace Sprocket Company (OSC).

The published experience demonstrates the introductory product knowledge component of OSC's proposed universal agent onboarding program.

The course is complete and published for web delivery. Visitors can explore the learning experience, interact with the content, and complete the knowledge checks and final assessment.
